Q: Can you please tell me how to remove the black “gunk?” from inside the sink holes of my bathroom hand basin? I’ve tried different methods using bi-carb, salt, vinegar, boiling water and even commercial drain cleaning products to no avail.
A: This is a common problem and one that can be solved. The build-up of black gunk is caused by several nasty's that love the moist humid environments within our drains. The methods you have used are the right ones to clear the build-up but in my experience, it is easier to prevent the black gunk from growing than it is to try and remove it continually.
My suggestion is that you have your basin Plug and waste replaced with a brand new one as pictured below:
Whilst your plumber is replacing the plug and waste, I would have him install a water-less trap like the one below. This type of trap design will help prevent moisture and humidity within the drain, discouraging the black gunk from growing.
Once you have had these two things replaced then half fill the basin with your vinegar solution every few weeks and let it flow down the drain. This will help prevent the black gunk from reappearing.
I hope this helps and that you have success in eliminating the black gunk forever and I would love to hear the results that you achieve.
Have a great day.
Joe
